Teaching Artist Project

Rigorous training and mentoring prepares artists to achieve academic and curricular goals while drawing upon their professional passion.

What is the Teaching Artist Project?

Teaching Artist Project, or TAP, is a collective of diversely experienced, antiracist arts educators training emerging and working teaching artists who are looking for a supportive community to engage in a self-reflective, justice-oriented learning practice in service of their teaching. The program entails a rigorous, 8-month curriculum, rich in social justice-based pedagogy that also provides supervised on-the-job experience.

TAP supports Community-Word Project’s global mission to facilitate culturally responsive, multidisciplinary art programs for students, teaching artists, and communities to develop and amplify their voices and creative skills. Formerly known as the Teaching Artist Training and Internship Program (TATIP), Teaching Artist Project was the first of its kind and remains today the only comprehensive training program for working Teaching Artists. Teaching Artist Project alums have gone on to serve over 250,000 students throughout the world.

Through the 8-month long Teaching Artist Project training, participants will:

  • Expand teaching through experiential, inquiry and reflection processes
  • Investigate social justice education, pedagogies and philosophies
  • Explore creative processes and critical thinking
  • Implement strategies for classroom management
  • Acquire and utilize teaching methods for multiple learning types and levels
  • Create collaborative arts lessons
  • Build community with artists, teachers and organizations across New York City
  • And much more!

TAP is committed to the professional development of teaching artists through a social justice methodology that translates creative process into educational practice. Our program will run from October 2023 to May 2024. The majority of TAP weekend workshops, and all internships, will be held in person in New York City. You must either live in NYC, or make arrangements to be in person regularly throughout the duration of the program.

Each session centers our creative process and identity through experiential workshops that includes, but is not limited to,  process based facilitation, power & privilege, teaching artist sustainability & entrepreneurship, and internships focused on applicable classroom skills, building a portfolio of work, administrative skills and experience. The focus of each session can be found in our program overview. We will have information about future summer and fall programming available soon.

Impact Stories

I would have to say one of my favorite moments today is entering the classroom again. Everyone wants to be in school right now, be together again, and enjoy each other's company.

I get to work with students on what is present for them in that moment, build their sense of who they are and what they stand for, and help hone their ability to express all of that through language and art.

The Teaching Artist field needs more caring, deep-thinking organizations like Community-Word Project! I feel honored to be a part of it. It feeds my soul and helps me grow as a human on planet earth.
